ESMA egypt (Egyptian Sociaty for Mercy to Animals)

ESMA is a charitable organization, formed in 2007 by a group of egyptians and expats. They have an animal shelter and an adoption center where there are about 300 dogs and 300 cats, located in Giza area in Cairo.

ESMA does a lot of projects on improving the animal welfare in Egypt, feeding horses, keeping an eye on the zoo, petshops and petmarkets. They have vets, volunteers and many supporters, but they need help. All kind of help; donations, items at the shelter, more volunteers. http://esmaegypt.org/

I visited ESMAs animal shelter a couple of times to see what's going on there. It's a happy place where animals are free to play, fight and hang out together. They are taken care of, they get food and medical care.
But the animal shelter is also a sad place, because you know that these animals have been through hell, they've been tortured and mistreated their whole lives until they got rescued by ESMA.
I've met the animals there and I spent time playing with cats and dogs. Most of them are welcoming, but unfortunately there are some who are too scared to interact with people. They ran away when I tried to touch them. I've heard terrible stories about what happend to some of the animals and it made me think how bad the situation is for animals living on the streets of Egypt. Some of them can be saved and they will be, but thousands and thousands of them are starving, get beaten up or sat on fire by kids as well as grown-ups, get poisoned or simply hit by cars. There's no animal law for these poor creatures, no one to protect them against cruelty of people.

I rescued 2 street kittens, one of them was about 5 weeks old, sick and sitting alone underneath a tree outside a park in Mohandeseen area, this kitten was so dirty and had a really bad eye infection so it couldn't even open its eyes. I saw a tip about this kitten on ESMAs fanpage on Facebook, a girl saw the kitten, but couldn't take it home, so she was asking if anyone could pick it up and give it to the animal shelter. So I went there with a friend and got it and luckily for the kitten ESMA took care of it.
I also rescued another kitten, but it was from a streetgirl who was throwing it up and down in front of many people who were passing by, not even trying to help the kitten or tell the girl to behave. Nobody bothered to look at the poor thing which was screaming and shaking in the arms of the girl.
I was sitting in my friends' car, on our way out I saw what was happening to the kitten so I took it away from the girl. It was around 6 weeks old, pretty dirty and so scared and hungry. I took it home, cleaned it and kept it with me for a week until my friend found a nice home for this kitten, which I named Lulu.

I don't know why people don't like street animals, some might be scared of them, because they are wild and hungry, but they just want food and someone to love them. Isn't that what we all want?
