Is Facebook a threat to your relationship?

I’ve been reading some articles about how Facebook kills relationships and marriages and it made me wonder. I understand that social media is a perfect way of getting information about people and that it also is a way of collecting evidence of cheating and other bad behavior. The interesting part is though, why do people act more free on the web, allowing themselves to say or do things they wouldn’t IRL…. For instance an online chat is pretty innocent, but it might lead to more.

But can you really blame Facebook for that? I mean it’s just a way to connect and follow each others lives…. It’s also an easy way to get in touch with old boyfriends/girlfriends or old flames and that’s exactly what some people do, they get in touch and wait for things to happen. Even when they are in a relationship!
Back in the good old days, before Facebook and Twitter, we had MSN and cell phones. I don’t know whether dating was easier back then, but at least spying on each other wasn’t as easy as it is now. Your private life was private, you didn’t share your everyday life with the whole web, nobody saw your pics, no one could tag you or comment on any of your stuff… Now everything is out there, search and you'll find!

The real problem, as I see it, is not the social media, it's the way it affects people and their behavior. It allows them to get all kind of info about others, maybe even way too much info. Relationship situations, personal updates and much more.
Also collecting friends and people one used to know turns into what could look like a competition, the more the better. Unfortunately all of this can affect a relationship and in the worst case damage or destroy it.
